  1. Well to me I think that Hughes is talking about life in general. There’s so many things that happen to us in this life and to be honest half of the stuff we go through we shouldn’t. I think Hughes is saying how even when life screws you over and nothing is going right you should be able to laugh about it. That’s what humor is. Laughing at the situations that you shouldn’t sometimes and just kinda learning to deal with it. Now I’m not saying everything should be funny. I’m just saying how maybe we should learn to laugh at ourselves because that’s a really important skill to have.

    • I am having trouble not with understanding the quote but trying to put it’s meaning into words. You have a great take on it Bri:)

  2. A lot of people have things that they take for granted in this world. In fact, I’d say every human in America, or at least a large percentage, has had an opportunity in life that they took for granted. When we have things given to us we are taught to say thank you because it is polite. However, we shouldn’t say thank you because it is polite, we should be saying thank you because we’ve been granted a beautiful creation produced by some kind of being on Earth. In this quote, Hughes is making reference to these people we share the same planet with who have absolutely no way of showing gratitude for the things handed to them straight out of their mother’s womb! He is coming from the perspective of a hard working American who is rewarded for hard work, not for being born into riches, fame, and privilege. He graciously grants the idea that the skill of humor is being able to accept what you’ve got even if it’s less than what you deserve.

  3. It kind of took me a while to try to get what this quote is saying, and I still kind of feel like I don’t fully understand it. But even if I don’t understand what this quote meant to Langston Hughes personally, to me it means that in our lives we can’t really dwell on what we want or keep hoping for something better to come along, if it probably won’t happen. We need to be able to live in the situation we live in and accept that we weren’t born into something better. We can work at improving our lives and keep a positive attitude while doing it instead of constantly being pessimistic about how our lives suck. In our lives we should be able to laugh at ourselves and have fun otherwise we’d be miserable all the time.

    • I didn’t understand what this quote meant at first either…it took me awhile. For me, this means to laugh in situations that aren’t so great but to carry on and laugh for the fun times in our life. If we stay stuck on being too serious, you will never know what it means to have fun and be free.

  4. Self improvement is key to a good life. Part of that is not taking yourself too seriously, and having humor about a situation. Of course, Hughes probably understands that there is a time and place for laughing, and not feeling fulfilled and satisfied in ones life is a viable example. Humor tends to make everything better, and unrequited emotions should be taken lightly in the right situation. “You don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone,” and sometimes you have to laugh about it.

  5. I think this quote means even when things aren’t exactly the way they should be or how you would prefer, if you’re able to find the humor in your situation you’ll be happier. Being able to laugh and make light of any situation is truly having humor. I know I operate with this kind of mentality. There have been many times in my life (even currently) that I didn’t have something or was in a rough spot but I laughed at it, laughed at life. If you let those negative things take over you’re only gonna lose. Even being able to find humor in dumb little things can help you make it through whatever it is. Laughter and optimism are our best friends.

  6. I feel like Hughes’ talking about being able to laugh at not-so-positive situations in life, basically laughing at the silly this. Appreciate what you have and where you are, trying to further in life is something a person should do for their sake. always remember that there will be hard times and instead of getting angry and frustrated about it, why not just laugh about it? Laughing creates and helps give a more positive outlook on things and gives a boost energy rather than getting angry/frustrated which will just bring a person down even more. It’s all in the outlook and attitude.

  7. I feel like he is trying to say that there is always more to come and more to prepare for and it’s best to always have a smile on your face, a positive attitude, and a positive outlook on life. You never know what’s going to happen or what God/Universe has in store. STAY HAPPY ;). I feel like us human always find ways to bring each other down. We always think more about the negatives than the positive. Life would be so much better if we were more positive. (I didn’t get the quote 100% but, this is my outlook on it!)

  8. What this quote means to me…it means to laugh even when you can’t smile, to laugh when you want to cry, and to laugh even when the worst has come down upon you. To be happy and positive even when things aren’t looking great. We can take things for granted, and forget the kindness people have showed us, which is why it is always good to remember what people have done for you. If you feel like your’e having a bad day or your’e in a bad situation and can’t laugh, know that there is someone around to make you smile, to make you happy. Live. Love. LAUGH. There is so little time and so many things to worry about, but if we stand by one another, we can’t fall. (I think I got the gist of this quote; this is just my take on it!)

  9. To me, I think Hughes is basically trying to say that instead of complaining about all the not-so-good things that life throws at you, just laugh it off and view it as a positive. Let’s say you’re just having a bad day where everything that could go wrong goes wrong. Are you just going to sit and a corner and complain about how horrible your day is going… or are you going to shrug it off and make your day more positive. We shouldn’t let bad things in life bring us down, because there’s always someone out there who has it worse, and it’s our job to count our blessings for what we have everyday.

  10. This quote to me means someone has told a complicated joke to you and instead of spending all your time stressing on what the joke means, just laugh. Instead of wasting your time on trying to find out something to hard for you to understand, just let it go and the answer will find you when ready. Then you wont be so stressed and worried about finding the answer. Some things that you ought to have just aren’t meant to truly be yours so just chill and let things fall into place.

  11. This quote could be used as inspiration to keep going. When humor is laughing at you its a sign that you need to work harder to get you want / need.

    • i agree, this is another meaning of the quote. just as the inspiration to keep going wether you want or need something.

  12. As human beings we tend to focus on what we don’t have instead of taking a moment to appreciate what is all around us. Being able to realize that you don’t have everything that you’d like that is either tangible or something emotional but despite that laughing and smiling because there are plenty of other things and opportunities we are given that we take for granted. Laughing because all those things we seem to need but don’t have, exist but they can not take away our happiness unless we let it. This quote is a reminder to next time acknowlegde everything I am grateful for instead of what I wish I could have.

  13. I feel this quote makes sense when thinking about it from both sides of the spectrum. On one hand, when people laugh at those who are less lucky, fortunate, etc. they themselves may deserve to be “knocked down a peg” for being insensitive or less sympathetic. On the other hand, those who laugh at those more lucky or fortunate, they may be wishing they were as fortunate as those people and make fun of them to mask their own jealousy. People tend to be in their own heads and not think of others. Some are more gifted than others in understanding people around them and those people have a better sense of humor.

  14. To me, this quote means that you should stay happy no matter what you have. It says that even if you don’t have something that you should, you shouldn’t be mad or depressed about it, which I definitely agree with. No matter what happens to you, you should keep going on with your life and not mull over it. It also says not to be envious of other people who have what you don’t, and to just be happy with what you have.

  15. This quote means, to me, means we do not appreciate what we have until we don’t have it anymore. I’m In this case we should stay happy with what we have and not focus on what we don’t have. Some people wish to have a sports cars, but the car they have is just fine and some people don’t even have a car to begin with. We should live life to its fullest and not care about what other people have and what you with you had.

  16. in my opinion this quote means it’s funny when you don’t have things when you’re meant to have it. when it’s supposed to be and it isn’t it’s a little funny in a sense. not funny literal. when someone deserves to have something i feel that they should be able to have it. with want or need.

  17. Hughes’ is saying that most of the time life is tough but, we should learn how to laugh those things off. Life keeps going on, whether you’re ready or not. With this being said, you have to be the most optimistic you can, and grow stronger each time you fall. You need to learn how to laugh and persevere, not everything is worth suffering. We are all very fortunate, and take the opportunities and millions of other reasons we have to be happy for granted. When you fall remember every reason you have to be happy, and how lucky you are to have these advantages at your disposal.

  18. To be honest I’ve really put off writing this because I kind of didn’t know what to say. It really hit me. Anyway, I think that this is all about privilege, and how humor is how people get through so much adversity in life.
