  1. I didn’t get a chance to see “In The Heights”, so I am doing the alternative assignment. I listened to “Banuwa” from the youtube link, and it was very ethnic. It had only the drums playing and the choir. It must have been a native language because it was not English. It was also a very short song, but had a lot of meaning. It It was very fun to listen to and I enjoyed it.

    • I didn’t see in the heights but I wanted to critique the song “the club”. This song of course along with every other song in the show was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Jason Mantzouka. “The club” had a very cool Latin instrumentation and the dancing was phenomenal. Although I’m not a huge fan of Broadway or rap I thought it was done very well. I especially love the parts where the guys sang because they started in very precise unison then just at the very end of the phrase had very quick and abrupt harmony. It was very interesting and cool to hear. I think it was pulled off well. In conclusion, Even though the songs I listened to on youtube of the show were great I’m still not a huge fan of Broadway….. Or rap so I probably wouldn’t recommend this show to people randomly but it was pretty good. 🙂

  2. In The Heights is a musical written by Quiara Algería Hudes and composed by Lin-Manuel Miranda. It was first performed in 1999 and has since gone on to win the Tony for best musical. It is about a group of people living in Washington Heights, a not very great neighborhood, who each deal with their own struggles and eventually learn that Washington Heights is and will always be their home. The CHAMPS interpretation of In the Heights I found to be incredibly well done overall. I found the technical aspect of the show to be very fitting. It really conveyed the emotion felt in a scene. It deals with adult themes but also addresses adolescents concerns. I would definitely recommend this musical to someone.

In my opinion, the music in the show felt very authentic. The singers packed a lot of emotion while the instrumentalists helped bring everything together. The singers themselves I thought had great projection.

Overall, I thought In The Heights was amazing from start to finish. The casting was great and everyone did a great job.
I think this musical would appeal to teenagers and adults.

It is about a group of people living in Washington Heights, a not very great neighborhood, who each deal with their own struggles and eventually learn that Washington Heights is and will always be their home. The Champs version of In the heights was amazing.

One thing, however, I would have liked to change was some of the singing. Some people were off on their notes. It could have went a little smoother, as far as transition. The music was excellent as well as the background singers, they always had perfect timing. The audio was pretty good also weren’t really any buzzing or piercing noises throughout the entire play. Also the characters did an amazing job in really portraying their characters emotions.

Overall the play was great. I really liked the dance choreography and the music that sounded professional. I liked the rhythm and rhyme of the whole play. I would recommend this to really anyone. The acting overall was very good. It really sucked you in within the first minute of the show. I think this would be a real good way to showcase CHAMPS’ talent. It would be good for the whole family.
