  1. The song “In the Heights” is about the residents of Washington Heights and their daily struggles. Many of them are Hispanic/Latin American immigrants who came to America to provide their families with a better life. The song paints a picture of the community and everyone’s relationship to each other, as well as gives the audience an inside look into the city. The song also outlines the main characters of the show, and gives us some back story on who they are, where they come from, and their own personal struggles. Overall, though, we see that everyone in the community faces many of the same issues, and they are facing them together. Everyone just wants to do what they need to in order to maintain their survival.

  2. In The Heights is about struggle, survival, and love! Washington Heights is where the play takes place. All the people who came to live in Washington Heights are mostly hispanic and came to America to be able to provide better for their family. The main character Usnavi and Nina each have their own goals. Usvani wants to win the lottery and move back to the Dominican Republic. Nina has just returned home from college, which was a big deal to her family, but she comes home with shocking news for her family. At the end of the show everyone in the neighborhood discovers where “home” truly is.

  3. In The Heights is about life in Washington Heights, a tight-knit Latin community in New York City. Besides the exciting music, incredible dancing, there comes many struggles in the barrio. Each main character has a story of struggle and survival. Usnavi trying to make money and head to the Dominican, Nina who dropped out of college and does not know what to do for the rest of her life, Vanessa is trying to leave the barrio, Benny loses his job. Throughout the show, all of the characters party, they cry, they laugh, and finally praise their life. In the end, each character discovers themselves. They find out what it takes to make a living, what it costs to have a dream, and what it means to be home.

  4. In The Heights is about a following a few residents that live in Washington Heights. The play is based off of a course of 3 days. Most people that live in this city are hispanic . They all have dreams they are all trying to make come true. Throughout the play, there is romance, sadness, struggle and much more. This play is one of my favorite plays.

  5. “In The Heights” is a story based on the realities of life in Washington Heights. Most of the characters are fresh out of high school and are trying to adjust to life on their own as adults and realizing how challenging that can be. Usnavi runs a bodega with his cousin and it’s hard for them to make money with little to no customers. Daniela, Vanessa, and Carla work in the hair salon right next to the bodega and because the rent is rising on the building, Vanessa has to move the salon from the Barrio to the Bronx. Camila and Kevin Rosario are struggling to make ends meet with their car service business, especially when they find out that their daughter has dropped out of college. Benny works for the Rosarios and most of his problems come from Kevin because Benny likes Nina,(the Rosario’s daughter) and as a protective father, Kevin wants Benny to stay as far away from her as possible. Although everyone has their struggles, these people join in as a family to make a sketchy place like the Barrio feel like home.

  6. In the Heights is about a Hispanic community in Washington Heights. Each person is dealing with their own struggles and figuring out ways to overcome them(e.g. Nina dropping out of college or Usnavi trying to make enough money to go back to the Dominican Republic). While there are main characters, the play still generalizes how tough life is for the average hispanic in New York (or America in general). This gives the audience some insight into the way minorities are treated and how its always been. Even though everyone is struggling down in the Barrio, they all know who they are and where they came from and that reassurance kind of helps them go on with their days without being so upset about how hard life is for them. The neighbors/friends also influence and support each other throughout everything they go through so it’s like one big family coming together.

  7. “In the Heights” is the opening song of its own musical explaining the life in Washington Heights. There are families there who struggle with money but the play also shows the love and care for frienships in their community. While everyone has their own personal conflict with money they still fight for what they want. The play shows the struggle for the Hispanic community living in America and gives audiences insight of what happens to other ethnicities throughout their lives supposedly. There’s always light at the end of the tunnel and the characters definitely see it although they’ve been through hell which is inspirational.

  8. “In the Heights” takes place in Washington Heights in New York City and it surrounds a Dominican-American community over the course of 3 days. Everyone in this play is forced to deal with their daily struggles. It gives an outlook of the what its like in most Hispanic communities and what it’s like for the minorities. There are characters such as the main character Usnavi who has opes of returning to the Dominican Republic, Nina who loses her academic scholarship and drops out of college, and many more. Everyone has hopes and dreams of what it would be like to win the lottery but in the end everyone finds their place and some even realize that Washington Heights is their true home.

  9. In the heights is about a community coming together as a whole. It shows the struggle that they go through but it also shows the caring and compassionate side. Each character has something that happened, a struggle that they want to overcome. As the play goes on they try to go forward and pass that struggle while having the other people help, like a loving family. In the end, the characters find themselves and realize that they already have a home.

  10. “In the Heights” is a description of a day to day life in Washington Heights. It is about the Dominican-American community and certain daily struggles. This song gives a back story on the characters of the Musical and sets up the entire feel of the show. The song shows certain financial struggles and a hope to lead a better life. This song shows the true importance of home and community.

  11. “In the Heights” is a terrific story set in Washington Heights while in the culture of the Dominican-Republic. The heat of the summer reflects on all characters struggling to make a life in the barrio. Usnavi, Abuela, and Sunny decide what to do with $96,000 winning dollars. Nina, doing what she can to get through debt and school. Benny fighting for love and a culture he is not accepted in. Vanessa longing for escape of the isolated Barrio. Each individual going through so much pain and gain, just to find out that in the end, they are home.
